If you have read many soldier's diaries then you know that when they did have any free time one of their favorite things to do was to gamble. Wasn't it Sam Watkins who in his book "Co. Aytch" said that all the boys would throw away the cards and dice before they went into battle. So that if they were killed and their body or belongings were sent home their mothers and wives wouldn't find these instruments of the devil in their pockets. Now you don't have to actually wager to have fun with a pair of dice. I can shoot craps for hours just for the fun of it, just ask my wife. In camp I have been known to play for hard tack from time to time. I'm sure even if your only rolling "high dice" for who has to stand guard tonight you too will have lots of fun with these wood dice.

Harmonica, Honer Brand. Honer is one of the oldest harmonica companies in the world today. According to the best information I have, the harmonica was invented in Germany 1821, by F. Buschmann. The reed plate of many harmonicas (that is all that survives) have been dug by relic hunters in Civil War camp sites and on the battle fields. The one offered for sale here is in the key of C.

HISTORICAL SIGNALS AND SEMAPHORES

If the Signal Core is your interest your going to love this. This is not just some little deck of cards. This is a fantastic set of useful signal practice tools to help you actual send and receive using flags, semaphores or lights. There is also a great 60 page booklet on the history of signaling. You get one deck of playing cards showing the flags and the corresponding letter and another showing how to send using semaphores along with a semaphore wheel chart for fast accurate sending. You will also receive a signal flag wall poster and a phonetic alphabet poster showing it's use from 1913 till present. There are even two hand held practice "flashers" (cardboard cut outs but they work great) so you and a partner can practice sending Morse code! My Navy buds love this set and are buying them up as quick as I can get them in. If you have even a passing interest in signaling you'll love it too!

PLAYING CARDS 1862

Well it looked like nobody was going to reproduce these cards so I just did it myself. I got tired of playing poker at first Mananas with a deck that wasn't produced till 1864! The colors are brighter than seen in the photo. Some days my photographic abilities are somewhat lacking.

Here's what the original box (and our repro) has printed on it.

The American Card Co. Confident that the introduction of NATIONAL EMBLEMS in the place of Foreign, in PLAYING Cards will be hailed with delight by the American People, take pleasure in presenting the UNION PLAYING CARDS as the first and only genuine American Cards ever produced, the the fullest confidence that the time is not far distant when they will be the leading card in the American market. etc. etc. etc.
Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1862. etc. etc. etc.
